UPDATE: Meeting with Dr. Tomas Aguirre (Dean Of Students)

(In honor of MLK weekend, here is a short inspirational video that changed history) As you may know, during this week I met with Dr. Tomas Aguirre Dean of Students at Texas A&M University- Commerce. We discussed the importance of our petition. I'd like to share that he has passed along our petition to the higher ups including president Dr. Keck and other administrators in power for them to review the petition. The most important point that I received from this meeting is that we need a stronger presence of DACA students and supporters in the university to speak out on the topic. As an alumni I can only do so much but with the push of DACA students at TAMUC we can really start the conversation about the importance of DACA and the needs of students during these times of uncertainty. Dr. Tomas and I agreed to organize an open forum on campus where undocumented/DACA students can feel comfortable opening up about their status. In other words, DACA students can have a place where they can share their stories. I understand this can be a very sensitive topic as it may hit home for many of us. But what I have learned throughout my years of activism is that breaking silence and losing fear is the first step to making a real impact in the world. We also brought forth the idea of creating a student led organization composed of DREAMer students. If you would like to take part of these projects, please contact me so we can get you plugged in. We need DACA students at Texas A&M University- Commerce to take a stand together!
