Texas A&M's concrete jetty at Offatt's Bayou must be fitted with markings visible at night

The Issue

Too many recreational vessels have collided with the unmarked concrete jetty at Texas A&M's Offatt's Bayou property at night.  I have witnessed several and each resulted in hospital visits.  The sound of a boat crashing into what is essentially a concrete wall is terrifying and unforgettable.

The Galveston district of the USACE (US Army Corps of Engineers) and/or the US Coast Guard amd/or Texas A&M must take action to ensure the safety of boaters navigating these waters after dark. The concrete jetty at the TEEX facility on this property is a known hazard, yet it remains unmarked at night, posing a severe risk to boaters both familiar and unfamiliar with this stretch of water.

Boating accidents can occur due to many factors, including poor visibility, especially during nighttime.   A simple solution, such as a permanent light, a reflector on a post or some other highly visible hazard marker, could prevent future accidents and potentially save lives.

When leaving Offatts Bayou this jetty juts over 200ft into the channel from the land that is visible as you approach it.

The implementation of hazard markers is a realistic goal that can be achieved by coordinating with local authorities and maritime safety organizations to designate this area with the appropriate lighting and signage.  These measures are not only necessary but overdue.

By marking this hazard, we will protect our community members and visitors from this danger hidden in the dark .   Please join us in urging the relevant authorities to act now and secure the safety of Galveston's waterways. Sign this petition to help make Offatt's Bayou safer.
