As I'm sure many of you may already know, yesterday I met with Tesco at the head offices in Welwyn garden city. I spoke with Barney Kay, the head of agriculture, and Fflur Shepard. Though Tesco haven't yet made a decision to make any changes to the eggs they sell, the meeting was a rare opportunity to tell Tesco exactly why so many people are opposing the eggs they currently sell. Despite the scale of the petition, Tesco maintain the same point of view that they want to offer affordable products to all customers, and that eggs from caged hens are an affordable option to many people. However I believe that a compromise between animal welfare and customer affordability needs to be reached. Regardless of the standards in any particular farm, by definition, caged and barn kept hens never have access to outdoor space and are kept in permanently cramped conditions. To me, and so many others, this is inadequate and the sales of eggs from these hens must end.
A BBC radio 4 reporter came along with me and my Mum to the head offices, and although she wasn't allowed into the meeting, we recorded various interviews before and after the meeting which will be broadcast soon! Tesco clearly still believe that the best option for them is to continue the sales of eggs from caged hens, however, my opinions remain unchanged. I know that with enough support, awareness and media coverage, we can take the campaign forward with even more momentum than before. Now, we really have to make it clear to Tesco that the petition will only continue. We are still looking for the same change in available eggs and I will do all I can to take the campaign forward. From my point of view, I would really like to know from you (the campaign supporters) specifically why you want Tesco to end the sales of eggs from caged and barn kept hens? This would give me a real insight into opinions besides my own, and would allow me to tell Tesco, in the future, exactly why so many people are against these methods of farming. I ask that you please, take a moment to leave a comment under this update to say why you want Tesco to change the eggs they sell. Thank you so much again, for the amazing continued support of all the petition supporters!
