My name is Moses Totalik,

I am 27 years old, originally from  Gjoa Haven, Nunavut, I am currently under guardianship and trustee order.

Presently, I reside in a group home in Ottawa, ON and my guardianship, initially granted in 2018, early 2019, was renewed in August 2023. Before obtaining my guardian and trusteeship, I was under Family Services in Nunavut, and my journey within the system spans over 25 years. By the time I can contest my guardian and trustee order, I will be 31 or 33 years old, with a significant portion of my life spent in the system

I am seeking the support for petition aimed at terminating my guardianship and trusteeship. I firmly believe in my ability to make independent decisions, both personally and financially

If this petitions garners through enough signatures, I plan to escalate the matter to the Justice of Nunavut. Otherwise I am prepared to take it to the Supreme Court of Canada.

My story begins in 1998, I was apprehended from Family Services in Iqaluit and placed under Temporary Custody order and placed in a foster home in 2002, in Gjoa Haven, NU, subsequently I moved around Nunavut until returning to Gjoa Haven, where I lived until the age of 19. In 2015, I relocated to Merrickville, Ontario for five years under the care of a foster family. In 2018 or early 2019, I was granted a legal guardian and trusteeship through court.

The guardianship and trusteeship restricts my rights and places decision about my living arrangements in the hands of others. This is why I am compelled to seek termination of my guardian and trustee order. I want the autonomy to make decisions concerning my life and finances.

As an adult, I have the right to determine my path and make choices that shape my future. Being taken from my family in 1998 has left lasting trauma, both emotionally and mentally. Moving to different cities has further exacerbated these challenges, leading to the loss of my native tongue, dignity, and heritage.

While I can contest my guardian and trustee order in four years, the current program significantly limits my rights. With your support in signing this petition will empower me to bring this matter to court and contest the termination of my Guardian and Trusteeship.
