When attempting to change a massive institution, sometimes protests aren’t enough - until the institution’s funding is threatened, pleas fall on deaf ears. Just as Dr. King believed in, organized, and promoted the highly successful bus boycotts, we too believe in the validity and potential effectiveness of this small but important act. The Philadelphia Police have shown themselves to be, to a cop, racist and violent criminals who exercise power without restriction. The recent protests have shown as much - badge numbers are covered as they fire tear gas into crowds of peaceful protestors, rubber bullets pepper reporters attempting to cover the scene, and still brutality is used upon anyone who dares come near them. They are either ignorant to the very reason these protests are occurring, or too drunk with power to care. Either way, this is not what Temple University should endorse. By Temple’s continued partnership, despite any social media posts to the contrary, they are supporting this behavior. They are funding this behavior. They are putting money in the pockets of these criminals who have been given guns and badges. A school in the middle of the city should care more. Let’s help them realize how much we care, so perhaps they can realize how much they should too.
