Tyson Foods and six of its slaughterhouse workers face charges of 33 counts of criminal animal cruelty after they were captured on hidden camera by a Mercy For Animals investigator violently punching, throwing, and maliciously torturing animals for fun. The secret video (http://TysonTorturesAnimals.com) was taken at Tyson’s slaughterhouse in Carthage, Mississippi—one of the largest poultry slaughterhouses in the world—and exposed a culture of sadistic abuse, including improperly shackled birds getting their heads ripped off while they were still alive and chirping and birds painfully shocked with electricity but fully conscious when their throats were cut open. This is MFA’s third investigation into Tyson’s poultry facilities since July 2015 revealing a concerning pattern of animal abuse resulting from the lack of a meaningful animal welfare policy and oversight. MFA’s second investigation at a Tyson factory farm—also a McDonald’s Chicken McNuggets supplier—resulted in criminal charges as well. On Wednesday, the farm owners were convicted of criminal animal cruelty for stabbing chickens with spiked clubs, standing on the birds’ heads and pulling their wings or bodies to break their necks, and throwing live birds into buckets to suffer and slowly die. These criminal cruelty charges and convictions illustrate the inhumane and illegal abuses that chickens are all too often subjected to by Tyson. That’s why Emmy Award-winning actress Candice Bergen, who narrated our latest investigation, is joining MFA in calling on Tyson to implement a meaningful animal welfare policy to prevent the needless suffering of innocent birds.
