Tell Trump to Stop Damaging Our Night Sky and Threatening Our Access to Space

Tell Trump to Stop Damaging Our Night Sky and Threatening Our Access to Space
The Issue
The stars are disappearing — and so is our safe access to space.
President Donald Trump has signed an executive order gutting key environmental and safety regulations on commercial rocket launches. That may sound like a win for the space industry — but scientists and astronomers are sounding the alarm: the sky is filling with thousands of satellites, making it harder to see the stars, study the universe, and keep Earth’s orbit safe from disaster.
Right now, SpaceX’s Starlink satellites already make up two-thirds of all objects in orbit. The company has approval to launch thousands more — and has filed paperwork to raise the total to 42,000. Amazon, China, and others are racing to do the same. And thanks to Trump’s deregulation, those launches could come faster than ever — with almost no oversight.
Astronomers are reporting satellite “streaks” ruining their telescope data. Scientists are warning that the atmosphere is being polluted by metal and plastic from satellites burning up on re-entry. And space experts fear we’re heading toward a catastrophic chain-reaction of orbital collisions known as Kessler Syndrome — one that could trap us on Earth under a layer of space debris for centuries.
We, the undersigned, are calling on:
President Donald Trump
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)
Congressional science and transportation committees
to immediately:
- Reverse Trump’s deregulation of commercial space launch oversight
- Reinstate environmental reviews and launch safety procedures
- Cap the number of satellites allowed in orbit per operator
Require international coordination to avoid collisions and pollution
This isn’t just about astronomers. It’s about protecting Earth’s skies, scientific discovery, and humanity’s future access to space.
We must act now — before the stars go dark and space becomes a junkyard.
Tell Trump: stop the damage. Save our sky. Protect our orbit.
