Tell the USDA That Organic Beer Should Be Made With Organic Hops
The Issue
On October 28, 2010, the National Organic Standards Board ruled that beginning in 2013, brewers can only use certified organic hops in organic beers. The move came after more than 100 Change.org members signed the petition asking U.S. Department of Agriculture officials to mandate that certified organic beers contain only certified organic ingredients.
Right now, beer labeled as "certified organic" is likely to be made with conventionally grown hops. This is because hops are currently on the national list of non-organic ingredients allowed in an organic product. Products labeled as "organic" should have only organic ingredients.
