Thank you for your support, everyone! We have big news to report.
After more than 12,000 people signed our petition, the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office has reversed course and decided to file a hate crime charge against our father's assailant.
The Sikh Coalition’s legal team shared additional evidence and information with the DuPage State’s Attorney’s Office yesterday that showed hatred to be the primary motivation behind the crime. We believe pressure from many community members and the thousands of you who signed our Change.org petition played a role in this reversal, so we cannot thank you enough!
The Sikh Coalition’s Legal Director, Harsimran Kaur said, “We are thankful that Robert Berlin and the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office have filed a hate crime charge in this case. For the Sikh American community, a formal hate crime charge was never about a harsher penalty, but instead prosecuting the crime for what it was. We can’t combat the problem of hatred against minority communities in America unless our elected officials and government agencies acknowledge that the problem exists.”
Our father is out of the hospital and recovering. He sends his appreciation to those who have supported this case. We will update you on additional developments with the case and his health in the future but plan to close the petition now that the hate crime charge has been filed.
