Tell The NJ State Legislature and Governor Sherrill: We Must Redistrict Congress Now
The Issue
We, the undersigned registered voters of New Jersey, call on the New Jersey State Legislature to take immediate action to amend the State Constitution and suspend the current New Jersey Redistricting Commission, which is not scheduled to convene until 2030. Specifically, we urge the Legislature to place this issue on the ballot so the people of New Jersey can decide whether congressional districts should be redrawn in time for the 2028 elections. In addition, we ask that the NJ Redistricting Commission be reinstated at such time when a majority of States agree to a similar Redistricting authority.
Recent decisions by the United States Supreme Court have weakened key protections within the Voting Rights Act, threatening fair representation and diminishing the voices of communities of color, working families, and middle-class Americans. At a moment when partisan gerrymandering is accelerating across the country, New Jersey cannot afford to wait until 2030 to respond. Many of us supported the creation of a bipartisan redistricting commission because we believed in a fair and independent process. However, fair government only works when all sides respect the same democratic principles. Across the nation, increasingly aggressive partisan gerrymandering efforts threaten equal representation and undermine public confidence in our electoral system.
This is a defining moment for our democracy and a time for courageous leadership. We elected you to stand up for fairness, representation, and democratic values. We believe the voters of New Jersey should decide on who and how they are represented in Congress. We call on New Jersey legislators and Governor Sherrill to act now to protect fair representation and ensure that our state remains a champion of democracy and voting rights.
