Tell the New York Times to Investigate and Report Animal Rights Issues
The Issue
The justice movement for animals hardly ever appears in the mainstream news although so many related stories are worthy of investigation and reporting. The New York Times covers social justice, but it does not (nor do any other mainstream organizations) investigate or report the horrible conditions on farms (most notably factory farms, “big ag”) for the animals or the workers. They do not report on the role that the US government has in funding and supporting big ag or on state legislation that allows cruelty to continue in secrecy. The press avoids mentioning the disastrous role that animal agriculture has on the environment although climate disaster news is regularly reported. The Times and other sources devote precious space for “food critics” to discuss meat-based meals overtly supporting the underlying practices of cruelty. Overall, I have never read any article in a major news source or periodical about the vegan movement.
As long as animal cruelty gets so much support from the mainstream media, the message for the ethical treatment of animals will not be heard by the masses, who mostly remain unaware of the suffering caused by animal exploitation.
If one major news source, The New York Times, would step up to include coverage of cruelty to animals not only would people become aware but also other organizations might follow. The New York Times has the high profile and expansive audience to bring animal agriculture and other animal justice issues into the public discourse; please tell The New York Times that as a responsible, liberal organization, it must stop ignoring the truth about the treatment of animals.
