This time last week I was worried we may not get to my initial goal of 150,000 signatures, yet in just a few days we absolutely smashed the target, now nearing 200,000 of you! It's been incredible to see the amount of support and sharing of the campaign and I can't thank you all enough. For those of you who may have seen the recent and final episode of BBC's Blue Planet II, you'll have seen for yourselves the detrimental effect that we are having on our natural world from our ongoing use of single-use plastics, like straws. To see it all laid out in front of us is nothing but heartbreaking - yet it is critically important to raise awareness about the disastrous effects of plastic and demand our retailers to make positive change to protect our oceans - the biggest ecosystem on Earth.
Now that we have such a huge amount of support for the campaign, the next step is to get as many people as possible to contact Tesco directly across social media. Please tweet @Tesco or write on their Facebook wall with a personal message, or else you can copy and paste the following:
@Tesco Make the switch - stop selling disposable plastic straws and start saving wildlife! #thelaststraw
I'm looking forward to taking the petition to Tesco, and will of course keep you all updated with a date for delivering the petition. Until then, let's keep up the pressure, keep sharing the petition and making our voices heard. Your support is appreciated and makes all the difference!
Sincerely,
Clare
