Tell Salt Lake City: Stop Deceptive Rent Ads — Show the Real Price!

The Issue

Salt Lake City renters are being misled.

Across apartment websites, landlords and property managers are advertising unrealistically low base rent prices — only to reveal hundreds of dollars in mandatory fees after you contact them, schedule a tour, or apply.

These surprise charges often include "technology fees," "valet trash," "amenity fees," and even required parking — adding $300 to $500 per month on top of the advertised rent.

This practice wastes time, inflates competition, and puts working renters at an unfair disadvantage. In a city already facing a housing crisis, we cannot allow bait-and-switch pricing to go unchecked.

We are calling on the Salt Lake City Council to pass a Transparent Rent Ordinance that requires:

  • All required monthly fees must be included in the advertised rent, or
  • If listed separately, they must be clearly disclosed in the same location, font size, and prominence
  • Failure to comply will result in fines and/or removal from public rental platforms affiliated with the city

This is a simple, fair fix — and renters in cities across the country are demanding similar changes.

Housing is too expensive and too limited for renters to be chasing fake prices. We deserve real rent listings, not marketing tricks.

Sign this petition to tell Salt Lake City leaders: renters deserve the truth.
