The Issue

Across Sacramento, our neighbors are living with fear and uncertainty about ICE’s presence in our communities. Our local government should be building trust and keeping families safe. Instead, on May 12, 2026, the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors approved an agreement for the Sheriff’s Office to work with ICE and other federal agencies.

This agreement raises serious concerns:

1) ICE has a leadership role in joint operations. Removals are one of the approved activities of this agreement.
2) It allows information sharing. Our neighbors deserve to know how their personal information may be shared and used.
3) Agencies investigate their own personnel for misconduct. Without independent oversight, it is harder for the public to trust that wrongdoing will be addressed.
4) The public was left in the dark. The Board approved the agreement in May 2026, even though it covers a period beginning in October 2025.

The threat of racial profiling is real. The Supreme Court temporarily lifted a lower court order that restricted immigration stops in the Los Angeles area based on factors including race, ethnicity, language, and occupation. Here in Sacramento, the ACLU of Northern California has documented troubling racial disparities in local law enforcement traffic stops. That makes this agreement even more concerning.

And this isn’t the first time the Sheriff’s cooperation with ICE has raised concerns. In 2022, the Sheriff’s Office settled a lawsuit for unlawfully transferring immigrants from the county jail to ICE custody.

All of us deserve to feel safe in our communities, regardless of where we were born or our immigration status. Policies that make our neighbors afraid to seek help, access services, or go about their daily lives do not make Sacramento safer.

We can address human trafficking and protect survivors without entering into a dangerous agreement with ICE.

Sign this petition to urge the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors to rescind the Sheriff’s agreement with ICE.

Let’s stand together for a Sacramento where everyone belongs.
