Tell President Biden: Stop approving oil, gas, and coal drilling projects!
The Issue
President Biden has recently approved the Willow Project, a large oil drilling project in Alaska. In response, tell him not to approve any more drilling that will endanger our future.
Globally, the US is #2 for the most carbon emissions produced each year. Carbon emissions contribute to global warming, which leads to higher temperatures, more extreme weather events, melting arctic ice, sea level rise that will make some areas uninhabitable, wildfires, and other effects. Underserved communities who often contribute the least to global warming are disproportionately impacted by it.
The US is already not on track to meet the Paris Agreement target. If emissions are not reduced, the planet will continue to warm and make some places uninhabitable. It is Mr. Biden's responsibility to take all action to prevent this, including stopping new oil, coal, and gas projects. The climate clock shows that we have under seven years to limit global warming to under 1.5 degrees C.
While some jobs may be provided through fossil fuel projects, a decarbonized economy that does not include oil drilling projects is a better solution. According to UN, "Climate action is not a budget buster or economy-wrecker: In fact, shifting to a green economy will add jobs. It could yield a direct economic gain of US$26 trillion through to 2030 compared with business-as-usual."
