Tell Ontario's Opposition Leaders: Cooperate in the next election to defeat Doug Ford!

The Issue

Across the globe, billionaires are taking control of governments to pull more and more money and power into their hands while most others struggle and our planet burns. Trump's election win supported by Musk, Bezos and Zuckerberg is the most recent example.

In Ontario, Doug Ford has called an early election before results of the RCMP investigation come out regarding his corrupt deals with billionaire developers.  A third Ford majority would lead to a continued destruction of our environment, our education system, our health care system, and all programmes that support the vulnerable.  He can get a "majority" with just under 40% of the popular vote and cause severe damage to our society that the majority of the population does not support.

This dictatorship of the minority is only allowed by our first-past-the-post voting system.  In the coming election, Opposition Leaders need to put an end to this once and for all.

We call on NDP Leader Marit Stiles, Liberal Leader Bonnie Crombie, and Green Party Leader Mike Schreiner to cooperate in the next election so that just one candidate from their 3 parties is running in each riding.  After the election, they then can run a coalition government for a period of 2-3 years while they work to bring in proportional representation for the next election.  Partisan aspirations need to be set aside for the sake of the province.  The future of Ontario should be more important to them than the success of their party in the next election.

How they organize this would need to be determined through negotiation and consensus, and fast.  One way it could be done would be the following:

  1. In each riding, whoever is the current MPP for the riding would be the candidate for the next election.  If that candidate is no longer running, the party that the candidate belongs to could choose a different candidate.
  2. In ridings where the MPP is a PC or is independent, the party who came in second would choose the candidate for that riding.
  3. The leader of the party who wins the most seats would become the leader of the Coalition, and the leader of the party in the Coalition with the 2nd most votes would be the Deputy Premier.  The leader of the 3rd party would have the Cabinet position of their choice.  Choosing the Cabinet would be jointly decided between the 3 leaders and would be as proportional as possible.

Opposition Leaders can come up with any deal they want, including their priorities beyond Proportional Representation.  The above is merely an example of how it could work.

We call on Marit Stiles, Bonnie Crombie and Mike Schreiner to commit to cooperation in the next election, a temporary coalition government, and the implementation of Proportional Representation.  This is an urgent matter and with all the threats we face, Ontario cannot wait any longer for a real democracy where the people truly rule.  We cannot afford one more term of Ford and the billionaires who have bought him.
