Tell Nuñez to Keep ICE Off FIU Campus!
The Issue
Keep ICE off FIU Campus!
Dear President Nuñez, Provost Bejar, and Members of the FIU Board of Trustees,
We insist that you reverse your recent decision to enroll in 287(g) which allows FIU campus police to stop, question, and detain people who are suspected of being undocumented.
Florida International University prides itself on its vibrant multicultural community, filled with students from over 142 countries who come together in unity, making FIU an incredible learning environment.
Allowing on-campus police to act as immigration enforcement agents is not only destroying any hope of any student feeling at ease on campus - making us an actively dangerous zone where police can now stop, detain, and question any student that they choose. It also is a direct threat to the entire student body - because we are seeing that across the country, people (migrants, residents, and even US citizens) are being forcefully detained by masked men who disappear the subjects, removing them of their right to due process by a trial with a jury of their peers, and ship them off to god-knows-which death camp where they are stripped of their human rights, food/water, dignity, and soon after: their life.
To willfully agree to this program of 287(g) is to disregard the bodily wellbeing of FIU students, and to irreparably damage the safety of FIU as a learning space.
FIU is the nation's largest Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), and it is a minority-majority school (minority students make up a majority of our student body). As such, we demand that you serve your students and immediately reverse your decision to allow police to act as immigration enforcement on campus.
