Tell JOE UEHLEIN and Labor Network for Sustainability: Stop Attacking Workers!
The Issue
Joe Uehlein co-founded Labor Network for Sustainability (LNS) to rally trade unionists for economic, social and environmental sustainability – yet he and fellow management are attacking those trade union activists who believe in LNS’s mission and are part of the movement they claim they want to build.
After harassing, firing, and replacing Communications Director Virginia Rodino with an intern, Joe, Joshua, and Liz have decided to layoff every single organizer at LNS. It is no coincidence that each organizer has been an active union member, with two of them holding the positions of Co-Chair and Secretary.
They claim the layoffs are the result of economic necessity, but Management is continuing to pay itself full salaries, including recent raises. The staff have offered alternative plans that would save union jobs – no one needs to lose their job. While the organizing staff that has carried the work of LNS forward for years are facing the loss of housing, healthcare, and economic stability in a volatile time, Joshua and Liz are on a “paid restorative leave” from November 1st through the end of the year.
If the layoffs take place, the LNS union will only consist of three unit members – one of whom is fighting an unjust termination – a clear victory for a Management committed to union-busting.
Our union remains committed to fighting for worker dignity. That’s why we’ve filed five grievances, three of which are already slated for arbitration, and two Unfair Labor Practices related to termination without just cause and direct-dealing.
In this moment of unprecedented peril for workers, and even greater threats among workers of color, women workers, and workers in progressive spaces, LNS must do better. For years, LNS organizers have fought for every worker’s right to a healthy environment and a livable planet – it is heartbreaking to watch the organization we’ve helped build turn its back on us and our programs.
Help LNS get back to its roots of fighting for workers, not hurting them. Tell Joe Uehlein, Joshua Dedmond, Liz Ratzloff and the LNS Board to stop attacking union jobs, halt the layoffs and reinstate Virginia Rodino!
