Save the Settlers Park Trees in Hanover
Aug 24, 2016
We have a new proposal for the Burr Oak Grove in Settlers Park. What better tribute to our area men and women who have served and continue to serve our country, than a living memorial (see below). We're asking for this proposal to be added to the next city council meeting on Tuesday, September 6th but the city administrator will not include it! Please contact city hall at (763) 497-3777 or email cityhall@ci.hanover.mn.us and let them know it should be added! Follow us on Facebook for the latest updates: Save the Settlers Park trees in Hanover https://www.facebook.com/groups/1753295451620399/ The Veteran's Grove Proposal Reads As Follows: Rarely can you find a person that does not know a veteran. If the person is not your mother, father, sister, brother, son or daughter, he or she may be your aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, grandmother or grandfather. If you have to look a little farther; she or he may be your neighbor, co-worker, teacher, coach or mentor. Shasta College in Redding, California, created a “Veterans Grove” of trees on their campus as a living memorial, in recognition of the men and women from their district and from this nation who served and are serving our country. At present, the City of Hanover has no designated area dedicated as a memorial to area veterans. This could be easily remedied with nominal financial impact to the City of Hanover. The Hanover Historical Society is proposing to designate the bur oak grove in Settlers Park as a living memorial for those who fought, served and died for our country. This memorial would be named “Veterans Grove” with the appropriate signage indicating the significance of this area of Settlers Park. It would remain, as it does today, a shaded space available for everyone for appropriate activities ranging from family fun to quiet reflection. The Historical Society will donate $1000 toward the initial signage of Veterans Grove. We would be willing to take the lead and contact the local veterans’ organizations for further funding donations, inspiration, and the formal dedication of Veterans Grove. We would cooperate and work with the Park Board to make a memorial worthy of the City of Hanover. Rather than support a project that would require the destruction of our historic bur oaks and divide our community, let’s support one that will proudly recognize our area veterans, and unite our community.
