Hanover County School District has recently banned the books Wicked, Red, White, And Royal Blue, and Slauterhouse Five. These bans, and all book bans, are a violation of a child’s First Amendment right to information, and infringe on a child’s right to be exposed to varied stories and a parent,s right to govern their own child’s media use. Therefore, we ask that the school district not only reverse these bans, but prohibit the banning of any book from its libraries. When I read many of these books, they made me feel understood and less alone, helped me process life challenges, and captured my imagination, soothing and entertaining me with their captivating stories and beautiful writing. Keeping these bans, or any ban, robs students of similar experiences. Additionally, book bans and censorship are rampant in today’s political climate. It is time for the American people to take action, settling a firm precedent that we do not want censorship encroaching on our rights.
