On Thursday, April 13, the George Washington University announced that the University Police Department, also known as GWPD, will begin carrying firearms in the Fall 2023 semester. This is the biggest policy change that Interim President Mark Wrighton has made, with only one month left in his term. Only the Student Association Senate Undergraduate Student Life Committee and the Faculty Senate Executive Committee were consulted about this decision, despite being in the works for over a year. This means the vast majority of students and faculty were not consulted, despite the major impact this will have on the GW community and Foggy Bottom. Arming GWPD will not prevent gun violence, but rather serve to escalate conflicts. People in vulnerable situations will be deterred from seeking help knowing that GWPD officers are armed and bringing guns into any situation makes deescalation impossible. We demand that GW reverse its decision to arm GWPD. We demand the end of police violence by GWPD. We demand the removal of racist systems of violent repression from our campus. We refuse to allow GW to put the safety of Black and brown students and the DC community under attack. We say as a united front - NO GUNS FOR GWPD.
