For decades, southeastern North Carolina has endured one of the nation’s worst PFAS pollution cover-ups, courtesy of Chemours’ Fayetteville Works. DuPont and Chemours used the Cape Fear River—our main drinking water source—as their toxic sewer, exposing half a million residents to staggering levels of PFAS until community outrage forced action eight years ago.

Yet Chemours still refuses to pay the estimated half-billion dollars needed to filter its chemicals from our tap water, leaving abused communities to pay higher water bills for a mess we didn't make. Additionally, over 11,000 private wells and counting are contaminated with Chemours PFAS and ~30% are still living on bottled water waiting for longterm remedies. Meanwhile, Chemours keeps pushing to expand PFAS production.

On August 14, 2025, Chemours made another request to increase PFAS production and change its air emissions permit. They haven’t earned that right. PFAS are linked to cancer, immune damage, and developmental harm in children. North Carolina must stop being a PFAS sacrifice zone.

Governor Josh Stein has the power to halt this expansion. By stopping Chemours, we protect our freedom to enjoy cleaner air and water, healthier lives, and a future free from the threats of PFAS pollution.
