Tell GEO Group: Provide Urgent Medical Treatment to Zahid Chaudhry
The Issue
We demand that GEO Group and the Northwest Detention Center immediately provide necessary medical care to Zahid Chaudhry, a decorated U.S. veteran, disabled and wheelchair-bound, who has been denied access to critical treatment while in ICE custody.
Zahid was taken by ICE several weeks ago during a routine immigration interview. Since then, he has been held at the privately run, for-profit Northwest Detention Center, operated by GEO Group, despite being a low-risk detainee. He has now gone more than six weeks without access to essential treatment for exophthalmos, a severe condition caused by his hyperthyroidism.
Before his detention, Zahid was receiving scheduled infusions of Tepezza every three weeks; treatment that must be administered in a medical facility with constant monitoring of his heart rate and blood pressure. He was due for his next infusion on the very day he was detained, but he never made it to that appointment. Since then, all requests from the detention center’s physician to resume his infusions have been ignored.
As a result, Zahid is rapidly losing his peripheral vision, a condition that may become permanent if treatment is not resumed immediately. His health is deteriorating in confinement, isolated from his family, community, and the medical care he urgently needs.
It is unconscionable that a U.S. military veteran, someone who was injured in the line of duty and now lives with permanent disabilities, is being denied life-altering medical treatment by a private prison corporation profiting off human suffering.
We demand that GEO Group:
- Immediately allow Zahid to receive his Tepezza infusions as prescribed
- Ensure the infusions are administered in a qualified medical facility with proper monitoring
- Uphold Zahid’s basic human right to medical care
Everyone deserves access to healthcare. Stand with Zahid Chaudhry. Sign this petition and demand that GEO Group treat Zahid and all detainees with dignity and humanity.
