Last week, President Obama commuted the sentences of 102 people. We are inspired by the President’s action but will continue to fight for federal legislation that could bring lasting change to the criminal justice system. Bills have received bipartisan support and Congressional leadership should allow a VOTE. We have to keep the pressure up! Congress AND the President should do all they can in the remaining term to restore balance and fairness to a criminal justice system the has grown too big, too unfair, and too brutal. That’s why #cut50 launched our campaign for #ClemencyNOW. We’ve also partnered with Change.org and the CAN-DO Foundation to bring family members of clemency applicants to share their stories in Washington D.C. on November 15th. We will host meetings with Members of Congress and a series of actions like a candlelight vigil in front of the White House. Our elected leaders need to hear directly from these family members. Many of these families don’t have the money to make this trip. So we’re fundraising $10,000 to help cover their travel costs. But there are still thousands more who deserve a second chance and the window for the President to fulfill his clemency promise is rapidly closing.
