Tell City Council to Appoint Voters Choice to Open Council Seat

The Issue

This petition is to encourage the King City council to appoint the voter’s choice to the recently posted King City City Council vacancy. Here we are, nearing the end of the year, and there is a new council seat vacancy being posted before the November election results are even final! We just voted for three open Council seats – so what’s the deal?!

The November election was to elect three new councilors to fill council seats that expire at the end of 2024. The council vacancy that was recently posted occurred after a judicial battle that was resolved after the election.

In February of 2024 King City residents successfully recalled four city councilors for not supporting their constituents. King City retaliated by reappointing one of the recalled councilors to an even longer term, claiming it was to a different seat on the council. A concerned King City resident filed a lawsuit against the city for their actions. In November 2024, a Washington County Judge ruled King City violated their municipal code saying they must follow all state laws. Reseating a recalled councilor was a violation of the Oregon state constitution. Immediately after the judge’s ruling, the recalled councilor resigned and the city posted a vacancy notice for his seat.

Current council plans to hold interviews for the vacancy on December 20, 2024 – just weeks before the newly elected councils’ terms begin. This gives the appearance of attempting to bypass the voices of constituents once again. The regular election results have not yet been certified and the difference between the 3rd and 4th place is less than 10 votes. The fourth place candidate will be submitting an application for the open council seat.

Please sign this petition to encourage the King City council to appoint the voters choice to the vacant seat. Appointing the voters choice to council is a step in the right direction to rebuilding trust with the community.
