Tell AI Companies: Make Artificial Intelligence Sustainable and Green

The Issue

As artificial intelligence grows more powerful, its environmental footprint is growing too—quietly but dangerously. Major AI companies like OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Meta, and Anthropic are training and deploying massive models that consume vast amounts of electricity and water, contributing to pollution, carbon emissions, and climate stress.

We are calling on these companies to take immediate action toward a smarter, greener, and more ethical future for AI.

This petition supports an Open Letter to AI Leaders, urging them to adopt the following sustainability and equity measures:

Our Demands:

1. Publicly disclose the environmental impact of AI training and deployment (carbon, energy, and water use).

2. Invest in energy-efficient model design—including sparse, quantized, and on-device AI.

3. Create and support a Green AI certification standard to measure and reward sustainable development.

4. Power all AI infrastructure with 100% renewable energy by 2030.

5. Ensure equitable access to low-impact AI tools, not just for corporate customers but for educators, researchers, and nonprofits.

AI should be a tool for solving global problems—not contributing to them.

If left unchecked, the environmental toll of AI could undermine the very future it’s meant to improve. But if guided by principles of sustainability and fairness, AI can help lead the way toward a livable, just, and thriving world.
