Tax the polluters, not the people

The Issue

We’re drowning in plastic. From our beloved beaches to the rivers that sustain our ecosystems, and even within the food that nourishes us, plastic pervades every corner of our lives. Disturbingly, even the bodies of newborn babies are not spared, as microplastics are found within them. Yet, amidst this environmental catastrophe, corporations continue unperturbed, paying ZERO penalty, facing ZERO consequence, taking ZERO accountability — while the world bears the brunt of this crisis.

The undeniable truth is that people don’t choose plastic. Rather, it is corporations that impose this toxic material upon us. With the products they produce, they leave us with no alternatives, no refill options, and no sustainable versions to turn to. Moreover, they engage in these practices knowingly and profit enormously from it — all while creating a mountain of waste that grows precariously by the day. Their investment isn't just in production alone; they also funnel billions into advertising strategies that psychologically bind us to their products, knowing full well the environmental debilitation it causes.

According to the United Nations, at least 8 million tonnes of plastic end up in our oceans every year, which is equivalent to a garbage truck dumping plastic into the sea every single minute. A startling report from the World Economic Forum predicts that by 2050, there could be more plastic in the ocean than fish by weight.

This is a deeply personal plea. While individuals make sincere efforts to curb plastic usage, by recycling and opting for reusable items whenever possible, significant and lasting change can only be accomplished at the root of the problem. Corporations must be held accountable. They should face taxes on the tremendous volumes of plastic they produce, a measure that would pressure them to innovate, create alternative materials, and ultimately, curb their overproduction.

We call upon policymakers to enact legislation that taxes plastic production at the source, incentivizing companies to reduce their plastic footprint, support sustainable alternatives, and invest genuinely in our planet's future.

Plastic pollution is an emergency that demands urgent action. We implore you to unite with us in this movement to protect our planet from the ever-looming tide of plastic waste. Stand with us in telling corporations loud and clear that it's time for a change. Sign this petition, and let's push together for a cleaner, plastic-free world.
