The Issue

As the lead of the Taunton Bus Users group, it has become increasingly apparent that our bus services  are not facilitating the needs of the town.

Many areas in Taunton, including Wellsprings, Priorswood, Nerrols Farm, Holway, Blackbrook, Galmington, and Lane Estate, as well as neighbouring communities of Orchard Grove, Norton Fitzwarren, Bathpool and Staplegrove are currently underserved by public transport, which is vital for our thriving community.

Without this essential service, residents face significant challenges, such as difficulties in reaching employment centers, schools, healthcare facilities, and other essential services. The lack of a reliable bus service also negatively impacts our community’s elderly and disabled residents who rely heavily on public transport to maintain their independence and access necessary services. Furthermore, a sustainable, fast, and frequent bus service is vital in our efforts to reduce traffic congestion and pollution, thereby promoting a healthier and more environmentally-friendly community.

According to Transport for Quality of Life, a focus on public transportation can reduce carbon emissions by 10% in a decade, aiding our community's fight against climate change. Moreover, a reliable service can revitalize local business districts, as easy transport options encourage more foot traffic and business, which ultimately powers our local economy.

We propose working with partners to develop enhancement of the bus services in these areas, ensuring they are sustainable, fast, and frequent to meet the needs of all residents. This includes an in-depth needs assessment, collaboration with local stakeholders, transparent service planning, and the integration of eco-friendly buses.

By working together, we can advocate for the restoration of this critical public service, making Taunton a more connected and inclusive place to live.

Join us in calling for urgent action to restore these vital bus services. Sign this petition to help us engage with central government on future funding for our county’s bus services.

We have built a strong relationship with our partners in Somerset Council, Taunton Town Council , Citizen Somerset, Youth Parliament and other organisations to ensure every voice is heard towards building a sustainable transport future for Taunton.

We need to continue to build and strengthen this partnership so we can share a strong ask of current and future governments when it comes to bus services.
