The Grandstand still stands because of the effort over the past 18 months of the Golden Bay Grand Stand Community Trust, with the support of a significant proportion of the local commmunity. Unfortunately the latest decision of TDC in November 2017 was to decline the Trust’s proposal to restore the grandstand on its present site but left open the opportunity for the Trust or some other entity to take the material and relocate the grandstand on an alternative site. A proposal to relocate the grandstand by approximately 20 metres from the existing site was developed by two prominent members of the community not associated with the Trust. This proposal was conditionally accepted by the TDC at their December 2017 meeting. The Trust acknowledges that a wider set of skills and community involvement is required for the new focus on actually restoring the grandstand and a new organisation has been formed (with Trust representation) to undertake this task. The first priority is to submit a proposal to TDC for the relocation and restoration of the grandstand by 2nd February 2018. Thank you for your continued support! Photo is of the Grandstand and now-demolished Produce Booth (the long thin building to the top right of the Grandstand) taken between 1945 and 1948. Faintly visible within the outer boundary of the grounds is the outline of the original asphalt-sealed cycle track made by the Takaka Athletic and Cycling Club, who originally owned then shared ownership of the showgrounds with the Golden Bay A&P Association.
