Irish Legal News has just published an article online at irishlegal.com which states:
" The head of the Symphysiotomy Payment Scheme has criticised “misinformation” surrounding plans to shred documents submitted by symphysiotomy survivors.
Judge Maureen Harding Clark told The Irish Times that the scheme only offered to shred documents where directed by applicants.
She also said the scheme did not possess any original medical records and other original documents were being returned."
However, the original post concerning shredding records on the Symphysiotomy Payment Scheme's website (see photoshot of it below) indicated a clear intention to shred records in the case of all applicants who did not send in any indication / reply to an online announcement.
The announcement on the Scheme's website stated categorically:
"To all applicants whose application has been determined:
The Scheme will very soon be in its final stages of administration. If you wish the Scheme to return all your application documents to you, please let the Scheme know before the 29th February 2016.
If we do not hear from you by this date, the Scheme will assume that you are happy to have your documents shredded and will proceed to shred them when the work of the Scheme is complete."
The Scheme appears to have adopted a different communication strategy regarding plans to shred in recent days, no doubt partially in response to the huge public reaction to it's original stated intentions. However, a number of questions still arise concerning those records that now will most definitely be shredded and whether or not records that document human rights violations should ever be destroyed at all.
Please widely share and sign this petition to urge the Government not to consent to the shredding of any of the documents. We urge the Government to return these records to all applicants swiftly and automatically. Conflicting/changing statements concerning intentions (or not) to shred in recent weeks have caused enough damage and disruption to applicants to the Symphysiotomy payment scheme. The survivors of Symphysiotomy deserve better treatment and can decide themselves what they wish to do with the personal medical records they submitted, now and in the future.
