Ban Catcalling in New South Wales

The Issue

In May 2018, Plan International released a report entitled "Sexism In The City" highlighting the severity of catcalling in Sydney and the immense need for action to be taken.

The organisation surveyed 500 young Sydney women between the ages of 18-25 to gain an insight into how they experience public spaces in Australia's biggest city. These were some of the incredibly alarming statistics:

  • 90% said they don’t feel safe in their city after dark;
  • Almost a quarter of women experience street harassment at least once a month or more;
  • Four out of five women say they first experienced street harassment when they were under 18 years of age;
  • More than a third of women were harassed between the ages of 11 and 15;
  • Those who have been harassed on a regular basis are almost twice as likely to report experiencing anxiety, depression or ongoing mental health issues as a result...

The list goes on. Now, we are calling on the New South Wales Minister for Women Tanya Davies to take action and outlaw catcalling in our state.
