Here's a good follow-up by Colleen Uechi on the Greg Brown monster Hotel, now offered as a vague form of fractional ownership.
Regardless of who owns it, it will never be legal for anyone to ever use it as anything other than a single-family home, with a 6-month minimum rental.
The County defines a Family in two ways for occupancy purposes:
Related: An individual or a group of two or more persons related by blood, marriage, or legal issue living together, including up to two unrelated boarders on a long-term basis.
Unrelated: A group of no more than five unrelated persons living together as a single housekeeping unit.
What would such a family do with 12 Bedrooms? (It is yet another lie that they reduced the listing down to 8.)
As Chris Salem is given the final word in the article: “This goes under the category of ‘buyer beware.'”
Brown's permitting process is the poster child for corruption within a tight circle of developers, engineers, lawyers, and a revolving door of department directors, and involves the county lawyers, whose crime of protecting the corruption is probably worse than the corruption itself.
And so this is not just about Napili. It's about All development on Maui, and it deserves scrutiny to expose and end this kind of corruption once and for all.
Had CM Tamara Paltin not killed the council-approved investigation, saying $90,000 was too much to spend, the County would not have now spent $1 million and likely $2 to 3 million or more of your tax dollars by the time this is finished, defending itself because Corporation Council forced the termination of Chris Salem for blowing the whistle on Brown.
The cover-up has expanded and has now led to formal investigations by the Office of Information Practices into Corporation Counsel's improper participation in executive sessions in the County Council, which Corporation Counsel is refusing to cooperate with.
Trust me, this issue is not going to go away, and this is just one installment in a trail of lies and misrepresentation by the developer, his layers, engineers, and the county itself.
Neither of the two primary candidates for Mayor has the political will to do anything about this, and they should both be held to the task. As should CM Paltin.
