Our lives in Dammaiguda, located in Hyderabad, Telangana, have become a daily struggle due to the unbearable conditions stemming from the nearby Jawahar Nagar dump yard. This dumping site serves as the only waste disposal area for Hyderabad, and its impact on surrounding communities has been catastrophic. The air is filled with a constant, overpowering stench that makes even the simple act of stepping outside a challenge. But more than just an olfactory nuisance, the dump yard poses severe health risks, with pollution reaching levels that are both unacceptable and unsustainable.

Local residents, including myself, experience constant respiratory issues and skin allergies, which are direct consequences of the pollutants spewing from the dump. The particulate matter, a result of the open burning of waste, far exceeds the safe limits prescribed by health authorities. Families with young children and elderly members are particularly vulnerable, facing health challenges that disrupt their daily lives and put a strain on their wellbeing.

Furthermore, the Jawahar Nagar dump yard negatively affects our local environment, contaminating soil and water resources that are vital for our communities. Leachate from the dump finds its way into our water bodies, threatening aquatic life and public health. The heavy metal content in this leachate is alarmingly high, further exacerbating the risk to our ecosystem.

Our demand is clear: the authorities must immediately implement measures to mitigate these risks. We call for the establishment of alternative waste management solutions, including effective recycling, composting initiatives, and biogas plants that can significantly reduce the volume of waste reaching the dump yard.
