I am currently a victim of stalking and harassment and have been for the last year and a half! My case is being investigated very slowly with not much progress with responses such as “just block withheld numbers” or “we’ll look into it but due to resources it’s not really important and could take months for intel to come back with a result” 

The last year and a half I’ve received numerous messages from “burner” phones each time a different number. The numbers have been sent off by the met police to their intel department with no such luck as of yet. I’d like to change this process and have more power to trace burner phones, for example where was the SIM cards purchased? At this present time SIM cards can be purchased by any one and not need to be registered to be able use them, id like this to be changed and suggest a requirement to register the sim upon purchase so that every SIM card has a trace to it. I’d also like stricter measures on such platforms like social media so fake accounts can’t be made to stalk people or send means of contact to victims. Things like ID should be produced when opening an account etc that way each social media profile has a footprint left to be traced back to, these measures not only stop stalking they can help capture people who troll people, they can deter predators who pray in children as children wouldn’t be able to set up accounts as they’d need ID also so this suggestion can help prevent many things and make social media platforms a safer place. If a bank can ask for id and other sites why can’t social media???

I’d also like the police to take such crimes more serious as I’ve been told on the past “it’s just a message don’t let it get to you block it” however when those messages become constant or saying they’ve been watching you or asking you to meet them in a place that is very scary and intimidating for anyone no matter who they are. Trusts like the suzie lamplugh trust do so much with giving advise but it’s a shame the justice system doesn’t back them with more powers to support victims of such crimes. Lack of funding, manpower or the fact “they are just messages” should never be a viable excuse to make someone’s life a living hell. A year and a half I’ve had to endure this stalking of made up social media accounts, messages from unknown numbers from either “burner” phones or using sites to send sms messages from (another thing that should have more tighter measures to prevent people sending messages that can’t be traced back) Thankyou for taking the time to read my petition and I hope that together we can all make a change we need to let these people it’s not ok and they can’t get away with making people’s lives hell with no repercussions.
