Take octopus off menus & out of seafood counters!

The Issue

The octopus, clearly, should not be thought of as food.

Science has proven the octopus to have DNA like no other being on Earth; to be a highly intelligent problem solver, shape shifter, master of disguise and escape artist, a sentient being with a set of emotions like our own, friendly and even affectionate to trustworthy divers.

In addition the octopus is anatomically like no other species on Earth, having nine brains, and three hearts.  Each tentacle contains a brain, as does the cranium.

For those who have viewed the 2020 Academy Award winning documentary titled "My Octopus Teacher", witnessed the extreme intelligence and "consciousness" of this unique being.  The film was an unforgettable documentation of diver Craig Foster's year spent observing  and friending a female octopus.   He captured how cleverly she evaded her daunting predators, the sharks, but confusing them -- jumping on their backs and riding them!  She also would build forts from shells to hide in plain sight.

This film also documented her problem solving skills, again, with catching prey and feeding herself.  The diver and the octopus developed a genuine connection as he was easily recognized by the animal.  At one point embracing the diver.

The octopus makes the ultimate sacrifice for her young --- these animals only get to live a natural life of a year or so.   And so they should.

The demand for octopus on menus, as our population grows, has brought about the unthinkable commercial octopus farms, where their short lives are confined to underwater cages -- never being able to live a free life.   Never being able to experience life as an octopus even for the short life span of one year.

Just because a living form is edible, in that it doesn't kill us to eat it --- doesn't mean we, as humans, should feel good about eating every living being.

Recommended also is the book "The Soul of the Octopus".

Please sign to tell commercial octopus farmer Nueva Pescanova of Spain/Canary Islands and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos- parent company of Whole Foods to stop profiting from these animals and to value the octopus for the admirable being that it is.
