🇽🇰 JUSTICE FOR KOSOVO🇺🇸🇪🇺🇦🇹🇬🇧🇩🇪🇫🇷🇨🇭🇮🇹
Four names inextricably linked to the political history of modern Kosovo.
🇽🇰In 1999, Kosovo experienced a decisive moment in its history – the creation of a democratic vision of a free and independent state. People such as Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi and Rexhep Selimi are inseparably connected to the bloody and courageous journey that led Kosovo from the shadow of conflict towards becoming a sovereign state.
These four leaders were respected and loved not only for their military role, but also for their political vision and their commitment to a democratic Kosovo.
They belong to a generation associated with Kosovo’s struggle for freedom and self-determination and who subsequently contributed to building an independent and democratic state.
Hashim Thaçi was regarded for many years as an important partner of the United States and Europe. In 2010, then-U.S. Vice President Joe Biden referred to him as the “George Washington of Kosovo.” U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton also recognized his leadership and his contribution to democracy, stability and the rule of law in Kosovo.
This international recognition stands today in stark contrast to the situation in which Thaçi, Veseli, Krasniqi and Selimi find themselves in The Hague.
EQUAL JUSTICE. EQUAL STANDARDS.
Yet today, these key figures face the challenge of receiving justice that reflects the great sacrifices they made for their country.
The war crimes allegations brought before the Specialist Chambers affect not only them personally, but also the aspirations of a free and democratic people whose leaders have been taken away from them.
The four accused must not be deprived of their freedom or separated from their families solely on the basis of political labels or insufficiently substantiated allegations. Even in the most serious cases, justice must be based on solid evidence, individual responsibility and a fair trial.
The people of Kosovo have made their position clear. Large parts of the population stand behind these men and demand their return home to their families. Thousands of people have publicly demonstrated their support on the streets of Kosovo.
For the people of Kosovo, they are living heroes who stood for the freedom of their country and who are now themselves perceived as victims of what they consider an unfair process. At the same time, thousands of victims of the 1998–1999 Kosovo war continue to live with the consequences of killings, expulsions and sexual violence; Human Rights Watch cites an estimate of around 20,000 survivors of wartime sexual violence. For many in Kosovo, this creates a painful sense of injustice: while victims continue to seek recognition and justice, they see former Kosovo leaders facing proceedings in The Hague rather than seeing what they regard as the perpetrators of Serbian/Yugoslav forces’ crimes being held accountable.
The Kosovo Specialist Chambers were established in 2015 with the consent of Kosovo’s institutions and a clear majority of the Assembly of Kosovo. Today, four prominent figures in Kosovo’s history of freedom and statehood are standing before this court.
Justice must not be selective.
👏🏼💪🏻We stand at a crossroads where it is important to ensure that the voices of those who fought for freedom and a democratic future are heard. Together, we can help ensure that Kosovo’s history is approached through truth, justice, and understanding—not through misconceptions or injustice.
🎗️Your support can make a difference. It shows that the world is watching and that the pursuit of justice matters.
✍️Sign this petition for justice and show your solidarity with those who risked their lives for the cause of an independent Kosovo.
