Hello lovely supporters,

It’s been sometime since I shared any updates with you - we are waiting for the hair education curriculum to be up for review in 2021 to take further steps. Today, it’s World Afro Day, a global day to celebrate and educate people about Afro hair - and I wanted to share an impressive campaign that’s calling to stop hair discrimination in Australian schools.

Please sign and share this petition calling to make it illegal for schools to discriminate against students’ natural Afro hair

The petition is started by musician James Emmanuel based on his own experiences of discrimination in high school. He was forced to shave his natural hair in order to comply with restrictive uniform policies. I am baffled that the Anti-Discriminatory Act is failing to protect culturally diverse students and nothing is being done yet.

As a mum, I wish to send my daughter to a school that honours and respects her heritage, instead of making her feel that she should be anything different.

At my end, while we wait for the hair education curriculum to be up for review, I’m working with private educators who teach Certificate 3 in hairdressing. Since they work independently, they don’t have to wait for the legislation to change. I am working with them to include textured hair training in their courses. - I'll let you know more as things progress!
