On January 18, many gathered in Tacoma to discuss a solution to the McCarver/Ruston Way crossing. Three levels of needed safety measures were highlighted: Signs, Pedestrian gates/fencing, and ultimately, a pedestrian overpass. The need to simply re-route pedestrian traffic over this dangerous crossing was echoed many times.
Although a number of city officials were invited, including the Deputy Mayor and other City Council Members and District Representatives, very few showed up. (Special thanks to Senator Darnielle for sending a representative to the meeting!)...
As a result of this meeting, several 'next steps' have been developed. We will post updates on opportunities to join in a sit-in at an upcoming City Council meeting. Until then, we encourage you to contact city officials listed below to voice your concerns regarding this crossing. It has been 14 months since the first death, and there has still been ZERO change to the crossing, not even a sign posted warning of the danger. The best place to start is to contact our elected officials, who do have influence and must be held accountable. Also, do not forget pen-and-ink letters- they can go a lot farther than an email! Thank you!!! (we will also attach a link to the most recent Tacoma News Tribune article/video regarding this crossing- very good article!)
