Justice for Zenki

The Issue

This is Zenki, she went missing from her home in Tacoma, Wa. in September 2019 and her owner Brandon Person searched feverishly for her for over 5 months. On February 17, 2020  she turned up at a church food bank in Tacoma. Zenki was so emaciated and so sick she couldn't walk. We took her to the vet and then had to transfer her to a vet hospital. She was there for 6 days while they tried to figure out what was wrong with her. The vets were telling Brandon that they didn't think she had much of a chance. He asked them to start her on antibiotics and steroids and we will see what happens. After a day or two she started showing a slight improvement. Every day she got just a little bit better, so on Feb. 22, they let Brandon take her home, with medicine and instructions on how to give it to her. We don't know that Zenki is out of the woods yet, but everyday she seems to get a little bit better.

We wondered  how she got to that church food bank, so we checked with them and they had outside cameras. We got the video from them and saw that a man had pulled up in a car,  got out and took Zenki into a part of the church where no-one was at, and then he came out of the church without her got in his car and left. The video clearly shows what the man looks like and Brandon recognized him as someone who lives on his street. He had put up missing posters for her all over the place, but in his neighborhood, someone kept taking them down, and now he knew why. This man must have either found her or stole her out of his yard and kept her from Brandon for over 5 months! And then only dropped her off somewhere else, when she got sick and he didn't want to be bothered with a sick dog who couldn't walk anymore! This man did not take care of her at all! She was so skinny, so IF he fed her, it was very little and when she started to get sick, he didn't  take her to a vet to get her help.

Brandon called Tacoma Police Department and said he wanted to report what he had found out. They said that he would have to call Tacoma Animal Control, which he did but they said nothing could be done!

In Washington State, according to RCW 9.08.070, taking and/or concealing pet animals is a gross misdemeanor. Also according to RCW 9A.56.030-RCW 9A.56.050 he could also be charged with Theft (keeping her, knowing that she wasn't his and that Brandon was looking for her; RCW 9A.56.170 Possessing stolen property and also chapter16.52 RCW for animal cruelty. But Animal Control says nothing can be done? Wrong answer! We want them to investigate this and charge whomever is responsible for taking and/or hiding Zenki from Brandon and keeping her from getting food and vet care.

Please help us by signing and/or sharing this petition to put pressure on Tacoma Police Department and Tacoma Animal Control investigate this matter!!

Thank you very much!
