The history of the Railway Village -- short film

A lovely Swindon Viewpoint film I never noticed when I used to help Viewpoint in the past….! It was made in 2005 and demonstrates the historical and cultural importance of the Railway Village Area. This area does not need to be newly-built to be rejuvenated back to a centre of art and culture worthy of 21st Century Swindon: the infrastructure and space is already there! It could easily reflect the range of things that happened before and after this ground-breaking time for Swindon. This of course would require abandoning old-hat 1960s visions for an inappropriate new-build, carbon footprinting Cultural Quarter. Make the area near the Wyvern something like a theatre/concert hall area, and get on with making sure our Railway Area is a lovingly restored cultural centre treasure totally unique to Swindon once again. With imagination and vision, this area could speak volumes about where Swindon came from and has gone since this area was built. To dismiss doing the Railway Village full justice as we are now 'more than a railway town' misses the point entirely and seems loaded with snobbery. People would really travel to see this.
