The Issue
Til stendur að byggja við höfn Þorlákshafnar sem mun gera það að verkum að einn áreiðanlegasti og vinsælasti brimbrettastaður á Íslandi muni eyðileggjast.
Við undirrituð viljum vernda aðalbrotið í Þorlákshöfn og fá það skilgreint sem útivistarsvæði. Þorlákshöfn er heimsklassa brimbrettastaður og með fyrirhuguðum breytingum á hafnarsvæðinu í kring mun hann eyðileggjast. Sjá:
Þorlákshafnaraldan er miðstöð brimbrettamenningar á Íslandi og í augum brimbrettaiðkenda náttúruperla.
Við vonum að bæjarfélagið Ölfus geti unnið með þeim sem stunda þessa íþrótt svo hægt sé að finna aðrar leiðir við breytingar á hafnarsvæðinu.

The main break in Thorlakshöfn, or 'Thorli' is the heart of Icelandic surf culture, as by far the most consistent and accessible wave in the country. The local council is planning a development outside the walls of their harbour that would entirely destroy the wave, burying it under a landfill. Furthermore, the council cannot specify the purpose of the construction exactly.
Our cause is to protect this natural wonder and cultural landmark and make it a designated and protected recreational area, for the benefit of generations to come. If this wave is destroyed, Iceland's emerging surf community will suffer and future generations will never get the chance to experience this wonder in the ocean.
We want the municipality and residents of Ölfus to take these concerns seriously and understand the gravity of our concerns. BBFÍ supports the prosperity of Ölfus and believe there is a clear case that this surf break is an incredible opportunity for sustainable future development, cultural benefit and tourism in the area. Container storage and other industrial storage can always be built elsewhere, but a wave like this can never be replaced once it's gone.
