Remove Sutherland's Cell Towers NOW!
The Issue
Sutherland Elementary's cell tower lease with Cingular/AT&T is up for renewal in June of 2022. The Sutherland LSC (Local School Council) is voting on whether or not to renew this contract Tuesday evening January 18th, 2022. We are asking that you make your voice heard and tell the LSC to vote NO on the renewal of the contract.
Sutherland is the ONLY 19th ward school to still have cell towers. Out of 653 schools in the Chicago Public School system, only 100 have cell towers on their campuses. We believe that number needs to be dialed down to zero.
Recent studies have shown that close proximity to cell towers and radio frequency radiation may be linked to many negative health issues including cancerous tumors. Students who are routinely closer to cell towers have been diagnosed with cognitive dysfunction, dizziness, headaches, nausea and memory loss. (A few links/studies below.)
According to the CPS Property and Lease Information website, Sutherland "rents" our smokestack tower space to Cingular/AT&T for $30,000 per year. (There are two separate contracts- one for Cingular/AT&T and another one for Verizon- totaling $60,000. ) CPS takes two-thirds of this "rent" leaving Sutherland with roughly $20,000 per year. Considering our current student population, that is about $33.00 per child per year. Is $33.00 a price you are willing to gamble your child's health or safety over?
We were originally not given a choice or a voice concerning the cell towers. We are asking that you help us rectify that now by signing below and demand that the contract with Cingular/AT&T not be renewed. (Verizon's contract ends in 2023!) Help us send a clear message to Sutherland's LSC- who were elected to represent us- that while $20,000 per year is nice- it isn't worth even the slimmest chance of jeopardizing our teachers’, our staff, our community's and certainly not our children's health for.
