Suspend Visa Regulations for Ukraine
The Issue
Dear Mr. President,
In view of the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Ukraine, and in view of the fact that the citizens of our great nation are ready and willing and able to offer safe haven to the women and children temporarily displaced by this disaster, we implore you to join 90 other nations in temporarily suspending tourist visa requirements for these refugees seeing temporary shelter in our homes. Please do not allow history to repeat itself. On the eve of World War II, the M.S. St. Louis was turned away from our harbor. It is a decision that lives on in infamy and shames our country to this day. I sincerely hope we are not now facing the eve of World War III but I also hope that we have collectively learned our lesson and will not repeat this mistake.
Please, suspend visa regulations now and allow us to honor the inscription on the statue that graces NY Harbor, “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.”
Sincerely and gratefully yours,
Viola Kanevsky
