Athens is renowned for its vibrant community and its rich history. It's a place where families thrive, students embark on educational journeys, and visitors come to enjoy culture and hospitality. It’s also becoming known for an alarming culture of unchecked drunkenness and abuse, particularly in establishments like Dukes and Dotties. We must not allow this to tarnish our city's reputation and further damage the lives of community members.

There are numerous reports and testimonials that all point to the concerning behavior witnessed at Dukes and Dotties. Patrons, myself included, have observed the enabling of overconsumption and neglectful behavior from the staff towards customers, who are often left in vulnerable states due to excessive drinking. The seemingly taunting and goading responses via social media to the outcomes of these incidents leaves the community even more concerned. This culture of carelessness cannot continue to flourish unchecked.

We call upon Athens Clarke County to immediately suspend Dukes and Dottie’s liquor license and conduct an exhaustive and transparent investigation into the establishment's practices. Such action is necessary to ensure the safety and well-being of our community members and to hold businesses accountable to the standards that preserve the integrity of our city.

We recognize that business owners have a right to operate their establishments; however, they also have a responsibility to foster environments that do not contribute to public health issues or endanger the welfare of their patrons. The problem is not solely with the individuals who enter these places, but also with the systemic negligence of allowing such a culture to exist without question.
