Suspend all Vaal initiation schools until Ntando Ngozo is found
The Issue
I am reaching out with an urgent plea regarding the critical situation surrounding the disappearance of Ntando Ngozo. Ntando, a young and vibrant member of our community, has gone missing during his time at an initiation school in the Vaal area. It is a heart-wrenching and terrifying time for his family, friends, and the entire community. Our cultural practices must be respected, but they must also guarantee the safety of our young people.
The initiation schools in our region are meant to serve as a rite of passage, guiding our youth into adulthood within the confines of tradition and respect. However, the recent disappearance of Ntando highlights a severe oversight in the safety and monitoring processes at these institutions. We cannot overlook the potential dangers that currently exist within these spaces. This is why we are urgently calling for the temporary closure of all initiation schools in the Vaal area until Ntando is found and a thorough investigation is conducted into the operations of these schools.
This pause will allow authorities to investigate existing safety measures, implement necessary reforms, and assure all stakeholders that every child can attend such schools without fear of harm or disappearance. The Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities (CRL Commission) and the Gauteng Provincial Initiation Coordinating Committee must intervene to halt operations in the interim.
In the past, there have been several incidents where children have faced harm or even lost their lives during what should be a sacred passage to adulthood. The safety protocols need strengthening, and the focus on safeguarding our children must be intensified as a priority over maintaining tradition.
Join us in demanding the immediate action from the relevant authorities. Sign this petition to voice your support for the temporary closure of all initiation schools in the Vaal region until Ntando Ngozo is found and necessary safety measures are instituted. Let us ensure the safety of all children and prevent such heartrending incidents from reoccurring in our community.
