Demand Justice for Survivors of Sexual Violence: Reform the Judicial System

Introduction:
Every year, millions of women and children experience sexual violence. Shockingly, less than 5% of these cases make it to trial, and even fewer result in justice. In many cases, those convicted receive minimal sentences, some even avoiding the sex offender registry entirely. It’s time to change this.

The Problem:

Despite the trauma endured by survivors, the judicial system often fails them. Convictions for sexual violence are far too lenient, and many offenders face probation instead of prison time. Victims are left with no sense of closure, and the cycle of abuse continues.

The statistics are alarming:

• Only 5% of sexual assault cases make it to trial.
• Of those, only about 3% of perpetrators are sentenced to jail time.
• Many convicted offenders do not even appear on the sex offender registry.
This must change. Survivors deserve justice, not silence. We demand a judicial system that holds sexual offenders accountable and ensures that survivors are supported, respected, and heard.

Our Demands:
We, the undersigned, call on lawmakers to take immediate action to reform the judicial system as it pertains to sexual violence. We demand:
1. Lengthier mandatory minimum sentences for those convicted of sexual violence against women and children.
2. Stricter penalties for repeat offenders and those found guilty of sexual violence.
3. Public inclusion on the sex offender registry for all convicted sexual offenders.
4. Stronger resources and support for survivors, including legal aid, mental health services, and advocacy.

Why This Masters: Survivors of sexual violence deserve to feel protected and heard. By enacting these changes, we can ensure justice for the victims and begin to break the cycle of abuse. Survivors’ stories matter, and we must stop perpetuating a system that fails them.

Call to Action: This petition represents the voices of those demanding a system of justice that truly serves the victims of sexual violence. We ask for immediate reform in the judicial system to ensure that those who commit sexual violence are held accountable and that survivors receive the support they need to heal.

Sign this to stand with survivors and demand change.
