In Oxford, independent councillors pushed forward a motion demanding the council sever trade and investment ties with entities complicit in human rights violations and breaches of international law. In January last year, the ICJ ruled that Israel must not obstruct aid delivery and must take all measures to prevent and punish acts of genocide. Surrey County Council has yet to take a formal stance on BDS, and any motion would face UK government restrictions designed to shield Israel from accountability. However, moral and legal imperatives outweigh these obstacles—councillors have a duty to act decisively against complicity in genocide.
