Support the Spitfire Monument Project
The Issue
The local Polish community recognises the historical significance and the profound impact of Trowbridge's contribution to the production of the iconic Spitfire fighter planes during World War II. These aircraft were instrumental in defending our nation, and the local factories played a crucial role in their manufacture. The Spitfire Monument Project aims to honour this legacy, commemorate the bravery of the pilots, and create a focal point for historical remembrance and community solidarity. This project is spearheaded by Dr Simon Selby, the Polish Hon Consul for SW UK, in collaboration with various community stakeholders and has garnered significant civic and international support.
The project envisions placing three reinforced resin replicas of Spitfire planes on a designated roundabout in Trowbridge, located behind KFC, creating a visually striking monument. This site has been discussed at length with the relevant authorities, and the monument will not only serve as a tribute to our shared heritage but also as a catalyst for educational and cultural initiatives. The monument’s unveiling would attract significant media attention and foster long-term networking potential.
The Spitfire Monument Project aligns with our town’s commitment to preserving and celebrating our rich history. It will serve as a lasting tribute to the brave individuals who contributed to the war effort and provide an educational resource for future generations. By endorsing this project, we affirm our dedication to honouring our heritage and fostering a strong sense of community.
Given the project's historical importance and the benefits it promises to deliver to the community, it is imperative that Trowbridge Town Council and Wiltshire Council supports and facilitates the necessary measures to bring this project to fruition. We urge all members of the community to support this project and work collaboratively to bring this significant historical tribute to life. By supporting this project, Trowbridge will take a decisive step towards commemorating our town’s invaluable contribution to World War II and celebrating our shared history and heritage.
