Dear Friend. Large parts of NSW and SE QLD are experiencing a flooding emergency. SS4C is thinking of and standing with all the people who are impacted- particularly those who have lost homes and livelihoods, been evacuated or stranded and who are anxiously watching the rising waters.
We have a big announcement for you - we are going on strike!
The Government is planning on increasing its subsidies to the gas industry which will ramp up exploration and extraction of gas. By emphasising a ‘gas led recovery’ to COVID-19, they risk locking in dirty gas energy for decades to come which will only worsen the climate crisis. They have already announced $250 million in funding for the Beetaloo basin in the NT in the last 4 months, and that is only the start! You can read more about why gas is a bad idea here.
That’s why we’re calling on the Australian government to #FundOurFutureNotGas.
As the Government releases the budget, we will be fighting for a better future without public funding of dirty fossil fuels like gas.
And we want you to fight alongside us, with May 21st being our next national strike for climate action!
Find a Strike and more information here!
To keep our actions COVID safe this strike will look a little different - we will be hosting decentralised (and Covid-safe) actions nationwide. We will be asking everyone to wear masks (reusable if you have them!) and use hand sanitiser, and will hold our actions in locations where people can remain 1.5 metres apart.
But even though it may look a little bit different, this strike will still have all the key elements of a School Strike 4 Climate action: school students, powerful energy, politicians changing their minds and support from you!
We need you to RSVP to a strike near you, or even host your own (using our Organisers Guide!).
And we need you now because gas extraction in Australia is only just beginning.
There are 5 new gas basins that collectively would push us over the carbon budget globally and, through Australia’s LNG export industry, lock not only Australia, but potentially other countries into continuing to use gas instead of transitioning straight to renewable energy. This is a big national moment for us to create meaningful change in acting on the climate crisis!
So join us on May 21st for our next national strike for climate action!
We cannot wait to see you there!
