Friends,
It’s 9 days til the biggest #ClimateStrike the world has ever seen and we don’t want any of you to miss it!
Australia has just suffered through our hottest summer in recorded history.[1] Our carbon emissions are rising.[2] Bushfires and floods are getting worse around the country. We know that fossil fuels, particularly coal, are the number one cause of this climate crisis.
Yet the people in power aren’t doing nearly enough to stop it. Our politicians still haven’t stopped coal billionaire Adani charging ahead with plans to open up one of the largest untapped coal reserves on the planet. And after decades of talking, we still haven’t got a plan to move Australia beyond coal and gas.
This is not good enough, and our generation demands better.
This is no longer just about our future. It’s about what’s happening right now. It’s about the fires, the floods, the heatwaves and the drought. It’s about the daily worry that each of us are living with -- knowing that the climate crisis is getting worse yet not seeing the action we need to stop it.
The climate crisis is here. It’s hurting people. It’s hurting us. And we all need to stand up to stop it.
On March 15, tens of thousands of us will strike on the streets across Australia (see the full list of events below) -- in every capital city and dozens of towns and centres. Around the world, we’ll be joined by students in over 50 countries. If you’re an adult, take the day off and join us in solidarity.
A federal election is just 2 months away. Already the #ClimateStrike movement is capturing massive public attention and pushing climate change up the political agenda. As school students, we can’t vote, but striking gives us a way to make our voices heard loud and clear. We are young, but our voices our powerful and together we can demand justice for our generation and generations to come.
On March 15 let’s march shoulder to shoulder and, when we go back to our communities, let’s ramp up our work to solve this crisis like never before.
“The youth of this world has started to move and we will not rest again.” [3]
With hope,
Milou and Harriet for the school strikers 4 climate action
